Sustainable Materials Research Teaching Innovation Engagement

I am an entrepreneurial materials scientist and engineer, interdisciplinary educator, and award-winning science communicator, currently Associate Professor of Sustainable Materials Innovation at the University of Birmingham.

I see my academic role as a creative one, actively seeking to de-silo knowledge for the benefit of myself, my students, my colleagues, and wider public audiences.

The above gives far from the whole picture. I believe it is of great importance to share our journeys as academics and to provide the wider context of how we ended up where we are, especially for the benefit of those—both younger and older—with no direct experience of what academia entails, who might be looking in and wondering what it all involves. I was in that position once. If you’re interested, you can read about the ups, downs, and everything in between in My Story.
